My coordinating teacher is cognizant of the time she has during her teaching block. She usually ends the lesson with some time left for the students to begin their homework. She ends the lesson by summarizing what they have learned by linking the objectives to the activites of the lesson they just completed.
The students usually listern to the closing comments and subsequently begein their homework. I think the teacher's closing comments provides for a good transition between the lesson activities and the initiation of homework. As students are begin their homework, they have time at the end of the period to ask the teacher any questions about the lesson. By having the students ask questions about the lesson, the some of the objectives of the lesson are rinforced an additional time during the block.
Reflections:
I think I will use a similar model for closing a lesson. I would like to tie the lesson objectives with the student-based activities from the lesson. In the closing of my lesson on DNA replication, I will be telling the students that:
In this lesson, you were able to explain how DNA forms a copy of itself by answering questions from the video, and acting out the process of DNA replication in teams. Both exercises allowed you to explain the function of Helicase and DNA Polymerase in DNA replication. Now I will give you a handout for homework that allow you solidify your understanding of base pair relationships in DNA. You can start working on it right now. If anyone still has any questions about DNA replication, you can come see me at my desk.
I like that there is a little time at the end of the block set aside for additional questions. Sometimes students do not feel comfortable asking question infront of their peers. I have given the students a bit of time at the end of the block for one on one face time.
